After his career as general director of the Van Leer Foundation, Rien started Van Gendt Philanthropy Services. He is an advisor to a number of families, family offices, companies and social organizations in the Netherlands and abroad. He is also on the board of a number of foundations and social organizations, such as Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors (New York), Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon) and IMC Weekendschool (Amsterdam). In 2005 he was the first non-American to receive the Distinguished Grantmaker Award in the United States and in 2013 he received the European Philanthropy Compass Prize.
