Green Key & CSR at De Witte

For more than two centuries, we have played a distinctive role in The Hague’s social life as a private members’ club. That makes it important for us to operate responsibly and sustainably. To achieve this, we have made a range of changes to our working practices and our buildings. These efforts have earned us the Green Key certification.

Green Key is the international sustainability certification for businesses in the leisure, hospitality and corporate sectors. Green Key-certified organisations take extensive measures to reduce their environmental impact, without compromising on comfort or quality for their guests. In the Netherlands, around 650 locations hold a Green Key certification. More information about the Green Key certification.

De Witte has now achieved Green Key’s highest level, the Gold certification, an achievement we are very proud of.

How is this incorporated in the Pleinbuilding and the Paviljoen?

Sustainable lighting

  • Most rooms in the buildings are now fitted with sustainable LED lighting.
  • There are partly motion sensors present for the lighting.

Heating of the building

  • The temperature in our building is controlled by an automated system (PRIVA), which helps prevent unnecessary energy loss.
  • The Pleinbuilding is connected to the district heating network.

Environmentally friendly dishwashing and cleaning products

  • The dishwashers, the newest of which is equipped with a heat pump, use environmentally friendly detergent with the EU Ecolabel.
  • Sustainable soap is used for sanitary facilities and cleaning throughout the building, supported by an automatic soap-dosing system.

Water saving

De Witte is careful with water: taps in the public restrooms let through a maximum of 4 liters per minute.

Food and drinks

  • De Witte’s kitchen uses organic and environmentally friendly products and ingredients wherever possible.
  • We select the fish on our menu using the Fish Guide, which means De Witte does not purchase endangered fish species.

Do you have any ideas?

Achieving a golden Green Key shows that our association, founded in 1782, is keeping up with the times! This is certainly not the end of the journey to make our organisation more sustainable, but rather a great start for even more focus on the environment and CSR (corporate social responsibility).
